Level 2 General Farm Worker Apprenticeship

Course overview

The agricultural sector continues to remain a high focus in the UK’s environmental agenda, with scientific research and development into new technologies, sustainability and environmental conservation posing opportunities for industry growth and economic . The advancements in the world of land-based activity, concludes a strong demand for skilled workers required to meet market expansion.

Our apprentices are supported and guided through their work-based learning journey with the help of Coastland Colleges’ sector specialist Learning and Skills Assessors. Working collaboratively with employers in the workplace to encourage and develop practical skills, knowledge and widen the apprentice’s industry experience.

Entry Requirements

Ideally applicants would hold a minimum of GCSE grade 3 in both English and Maths. If these are not obtained, an initial assessment will be used to assess entry onto the apprenticeship.

College attendance – You will attend college 1 day per week in the first year of your apprenticeship.

Duration – 18 months in learning followed by 3 months for end-point assessment.

Assessment – Assessment is continuous throughout your apprenticeship with an external final assessment at the end to complete the apprenticeship.

Course Structure

Course Description

The broad purpose of the occupation is to support the operation of farm enterprises through maintaining a culture of health and safety, biosecurity, engaging with third parties, maintaining crop, animal handling and health, maintenance and cleanliness of machinery.


A General Farm Worker will typically be required to drive farm vehicles and hold the appropriate licence. The apprentice will work alongside the supervisor, supporting daily operations for the farm enterprises including identifying and maintaining animal or plant health performance, conducting routine tasks and assisting with general record keeping practices. The apprentice will manage the storage of forage and crop, minimising waste and disposing of necessary waste appropriately. Animal welfare and risk awareness and prevention are integral to this occupation.


A General Farm Worker is likely to specialise in Livestock or Crop.

Qualifications Gained

  • Level 3 award or training and assessment in emergency first aid at work minimum 1 day course (face-to-face), carried out by either an awarding organisation, a UKAS accredited trade body or voluntary aid society recognised by government as specified in HSE document GEIS 3.
  • Level 2 City & Guilds Principles of Safe Handling and Application of Pesticides Guidance. Intermediate
  • Level 2 General Farm Worker apprenticeship.

Progression

  • After completing your apprenticeship, you could progress to the:
  • Level 3 Livestock Technician apprenticeship.
  • Assistant Herdsperson, General Farm Operative, Shepherd, Stockperson, Tractor Driver.

Materials Required

You will need access to a PC, Mac, tablet or smartphone in order to record important information related your apprenticeship. A yellow hi-vis vest, clean overalls and steel toe capped boots will also be required – your employer may provide you with personal protective equipment.
