Course overview

A practical course designed for the budding amateur, who is ready to extend their knowledge and skills withing horticulture. This developmental programme will take you through the horticultural calendar season-by-season. Learn how to plan, propagate and plant to provide structure and shape to your garden throughout the year.

Based in the stunning historical grounds of Kingston Maurward, we’ll work on key horticultural projects in the gardens, from restoration to rejuvenation.

Suitable for everyone with a passion for gardening. The course works well as a standalone or as a follow-on from ‘The Essential Gardening Skills’ run on Friday mornings. If you have an interest in gardening and are ready to develop your working knowledge of what to do in the garden and when without the pressure of exams, then this is the course for you!

We meet every Tuesday during term time from 9:30,. No exams or Latin names to learn, just great practical experience in a wonderful setting.

Entry Requirements

A keen interest in practical garden techniques and working outside in the fresh air. This course works very well as a follow on from the Everyday Gardening Essentials course. It is not suitable for complete beginners.

Course Structure

Course Description

Working through the calendar, noting down the tasks and the seasonal changes as they happen. The types of tasks we’ll cover include;

Autumn (Sept-Nov) – Putting the garden to bed: Pruning, division, vegetative propagation, mulching and plant storage.

Winter (Dec-Feb) – Garden planning and preparation: Garden management and planning, designing a new border, growing under protection.

Spring (Mar-May) – Waking the garden up: Seed sowing, hardening off, planting out, pest watch and control.

Summer (June) – Enjoying the garden: Harvesting, tidying, weeding, pruning spring flowering shrubs

Entry Requirements

A keen interest in practical garden techniques and working outside in the fresh air.

This course works very well as a follow on from the Everday Essential Skills course.
