Course overview

In Short

This qualification allows you to acquire knowledge and craft skills of electrical installation. It does not require occupational evidence from the workplace, so is suitable for those who currently do not work within the electrical Industry (but may wish to do so). The qualification has been adapted from the Diploma within the apprenticeship framework; so facilitates progression to the Industry recognised qualification. It will give you an opportunity to practice and be assessed in a secure environment on the installation of wiring systems together with the relevant theory of electrical installation.You will gain advanced skills and knowledge in a wide range of electrical engineering aspects ensuring that you are able to work both competently and safely. You will have the opportunity to utilise the IET On-Site-Guide with some of the units; and also acquire the knowledge of electrical science and principles.For the Level 3 course you will study at the College for three days a week. This course is mainly theory based but provides practical opportunities through inspection & testing practice and scientific experiments. It combines lectures, directed study, workshop activities and simulated jobs in the College.

Entry Requirements

Selection is by interview.

Successful completion of the Level 2 Diploma/Intermediate Diploma in Electrical Installation plus 4 GCSEs at minimum Grade 5 (C), or equivalent, including English, maths and science.

Course Structure

Course Description

The course is built around seven units of study. These share similar outcomes and allow for multiple units to be undertaken at the same time:

  • Understanding environmental legislation, working practices and the principles of environmental technology systems
  • Electrical installation Design
  • Electrical Installation Craft Skills
  • Understanding the principles, practices and legislation for the inspection, testing, commissioning and certification of electrotechnical systems and equipment in buildings, structures and the environment
  • Understanding the principles, practices and legislation for diagnosing and correcting electrical faults in electrotechnical systems and equipment in buildings, structures and the environment
  • Electrical Science and Principles
  • Understanding the practices and procedures for overseeing and organising the work environment (electrical installation)

Progression

You can progress your learning with Weymouth College from Level 3. Those who successfully complete the Level 3 course may be able to progress to Level 3 NVQ Diploma in Installing Electrotechnical Systems & Equipment (Buildings, Structures & the Environment). The course should provide an enhanced understanding of principles and skills required for entry into the electrical engineering and installation industries, and allow progression to higher education.
