In Short

Students studying this course will work as a hairdresser in the College salon, which is open to the public, and also have the opportunity to work in a selected salon in the area for a variety of work experience. Participation in local and regional competitions is highly recommended and trips to the Salon International exhibition will be expected.

Entry Requirements

Selection will be based on interview and successful completion of an industry relevant trade test meeting occupational standards at level 2 alongside demonstration of excellent customer service skills. A positive refence will be requested from employer or previous course tutor. 

Course Structure

Course Description

You will study the following:

  • Monitor and maintain health & safety practice in the salon
  • Hairdressing consultation support for colleagues
  • Colour hair to create a variety of looks
  • Style and dress hair using a variety of techniques
  • Promote and sell products and services to clients
  • Bridal hairstyling
  • Hair colour correction

As part of your qualification you will also undertake five days external work experience in a local salon. Staff can support you in finding placements, completion of work experience is a requirement of your course assessment criteria.

Assessment

You will cover the theoretical and practical work necessary for each unit. This will be assessed through online testing with the awarding body and practical assessment. Assessment is continuous throughout the year and will take place within a realistic working environment. 

Progression

Those who study at Level 3 may progress to higher education or seek employment as a salon stylist or industrial consultant.
