Extended Project Qualification

Course Overview

The Extended Project Qualification (EPQ) is your chance to take learning into your own hands.

It’s an independent research project that allows you to explore a topic you’re passionate about – something that goes beyond your A Level subjects and showcases your curiosity, initiative and commitment.

The EPQ is usually taken alongside A Levels or other Level 3 qualifications in the second year of study, helping you to stand out in university or workplace applications.

You’ll study in a supportive and ambitious environment with expert teaching and access to excellent facilities help you achieve your full potential.

Entry Requirements

At least 5 GCSEs at Grade 9-5 including English Language and Maths. You must be studying an AS, A2 or other Level 3 qualification alongside this subject. You also need an enthusiasm independent study.

Course Structure

Course Description

You can choose any topic that interests you, from environmental issues or medical ethics to film design, psychology, fashion or sport.

You’ll carry out in-depth research and produce either:

  • A 5,000-word report, or
  • A ‘product’ with a 1,000-word report

You’ll also deliver a short presentation (5–10 minutes) to explain your project and findings to an audience of non-specialists.

You’ll be supported by a Coastland College lecturer who will guide you through the research process, helping you plan, structure and manage your project effectively.

You’ll learn how to:

  • Frame a research question
  • Plan and manage your time
  • Gather, analyse and evaluate information
  • Present your findings clearly and confidently
