Course overview
In Short
This nationally recognised qualification provides studies in three scientific skills: Physics, Biology and Chemistry. It is the equivalent to three A Levels and is taken as an entry qualification to university. You will learn about a range of organisations and how they use science in different ways on an operational basis. A particular emphasis is placed on practical investigations to broaden scientific knowledge.
Entry Requirements
At least 5 GCSEs at Grade 9-4 including English and Maths and at least one Science subject at a minimum Grade 4.
Course Structure
Course Description
In addition to Functional Skills (English, maths and ICT), 6 core units will be studied over the two years:
- The fundamentals of science
- Working in the science industry
- Scientific practical techniques
- Scientific investigation
- Perceptions of science
- Application of numbers
Twelve additional units are studied for the full Extended Diploma ? these may include:
- Using science in the workplace
- Physiology of human body systems
- Microbiological techniques
- Medical physics
- Astronomy
- Chemical laboratory techniques
Assessment
All assessments are coursework or assignments based. There are no exams required for the completion of this qualification.
Progression
Progress to various scientific degree or Higher National Diploma courses at university.
