Level 2 – BTEC Technical Diploma in Animal Care

Course overview

Working with animals can be challenging but it is a truly rewarding career.

A level 2 course provides the ideal opportunity to develop your interest and skills in caring for a wide variety of animals and their environments; preparing you for employment or progression to further courses in animal management.

This one year course contains a mixture of theory lessons, projects and practical work involving our onsite college animal collection. The course also requires you to complete at least 80 hours of work experience with an external employer within the animal care industry.

Entry Requirements

4 GCSEs at Grade 3/D or above (including English, maths and science) OR minimum GCSE Grade 3/D and Level 1 Functional Skills.

A genuine interest in caring for animals, a willingness to learn and motivation to gain a relevant work experience placement will also be taken into account.

*Internal applicants who have completed a Level 1 qualification must have achieved an MM grade to be able to progress onto Level 2.

Topics covered include:

Animal husbandry – you will work with our onsite animal collection which houses a range of small mammals, birds, reptiles, amphibians, fish, invertebrates and livestock.

Animal welfare involving feeding, cleaning, health checking and the monitoring of animal behaviour.

Animal biology.

Safe working and employability skills.

Trainee zoo keeper.

Trainee aquarist.

Veterinary care assistant (with further training).
