Course overview

In Short

Lessons are designed to help you settle into the college environment and to prepare you for progressing onto a level 1 course or a supported internship. You will learn a range of skills that will help you to prepare for employment. Preparation for work will include independent travel training (if required), CV writing, interview and job searching skills, recognising employment opportunities, health and safety and customer care. You will develop practical skills during work experience in our Fleet shop, the Lounge Deli or other areas of college, progressing to work experience in the community when you are ready. You will have the opportunity to engage in conservation and sustainability projects. Support is available to meet the individual needs of our students. 

Entry Requirements

No specific entry requirements are required, but students must show, through an interview, commitment to the course.

Course Structure

Course Description

New skills will be learnt and qualifications obtained through work experience in the College’sretail shops, Lounge Deli and garden area or across the various college departments.The qualifications are:

  • Award/Certificate/Diploma in Skills for Employment, Training and Personal Development Entry Level 3
  • English, Maths and ICT.

The qualifications involves:

  • practical activities such as retail, catering and horticulture in a working environment
  • the chance to take part in activities such as sport, art and performing arts
  • taster sessions in other vocational areas of the College
  • two-night residential outing to develop team skills and independence
  • job seeking and employability skills
  • team skills
  • skills for gaining employment
  • health and safety
  • food hygiene
  • serving food and drink
  • healthy living
  • sport
  • discovering the community
  • have fun investigating leisure activities in the local area.

Assessment

The course is assessed through a portfolio of evidence; these can be written pieces, witness statements practical tasks or photographs.

Progression

On successful completion of this course, progression may be possible to a Level 1 Routes Into course, New Directions or a supported internship.
