Coastland College is celebrating the achievement of long-serving lecturer Liam Platten, who has been selected to represent Team GB at the Triathlon Middle Distance European Championships this summer.
Liam, who has taught English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) at the College’s Weymouth Campus for 24 years, and lives in Dorchester, will compete in Banyoles, Spain on 19 July.
To qualify for the championships, Liam competed in events across the UK, where he was required to finish within 20% of the winner in his age category. Demonstrating exceptional performance, he exceeded this benchmark, finishing within 10%.
Balancing his teaching career with an intensive training schedule, Liam currently trains for around 14 hours each week, increasing to up to 20 hours as the event approaches. He credits the sport not only with improving his physical fitness, but also supporting his mental wellbeing.
Liam said: “Training gives me the chance to empty my mind, very much like meditation, conversely and ironically this is when I have my best ideas for lessons. It really enables creativity to flow!”
Coastland College has proudly supported Liam’s journey by sponsoring his triathlon suit and kit bag. However, like many age-group athletes, Liam must self-fund the majority of his participation, including travel, accommodation, race fees and equipment. He is currently fundraising to help cover these costs.
“After years of competing locally, I finally met the selection criteria last summer. This opportunity feels like a whole new level of responsibility and has even caught the interest of my teenage children.
“I’m hoping that with my wife and kids waiting for me at the finish line, I can be a source of inspiration to them and other athletes in their 50s.
“Unlike our Olympic and other elite teams, age-group athletes have to fund their own participation. My employer, Coastland College, has generously sponsored my tri suit and kit bag, but I am looking for further support to help cover essential costs.
“I’m seeking donations to help me compete at my best for Team GB and make my country proud.”
Inspiration to students and colleagues
Liam plans to combine the competition with a family trip, travelling to Spain in a camper van with his wife and children, making the experience both a sporting milestone and a memorable family adventure.
Coastland College Principal and CEO Kate Wills said: “We are incredibly proud of Liam’s achievement in being selected to represent Team GB at the European Championships. His dedication, resilience and passion embody the values we champion at Coastland College. He is an inspiration to both our students and colleagues, showing what can be achieved through commitment and determination.”
