Gold medal success for Coastland College at BBC Gardeners’ World Spring Fair

Thursday 7th May 2026

Year 2 Horticulture students from Coastland College have achieved outstanding success at the BBC Gardeners’ World Spring Fair in Beaulieu, winning both a prestigious gold medal and the award for Best Interpretation of Theme for their show garden, ‘Salty Towers’.

Designed, built and delivered entirely by students, the garden captured the attention of judges and visitors alike, earning praise as “innovative and beautiful.”

The project showcased a strong focus on sustainability and biodiversity, reflecting key environmental principles at the heart of the course.

A standout feature of ‘Salty Towers’ was its striking ‘salt tower’ inspired wall, constructed using hazel (Corylus) and dogwood (Cornus).

The garden also featured a substantial timber pergola and an impressive planting scheme, including specimens such as Cytisus ‘Boskoop Burgundy’, Acanthus mollis ‘Whitewater’, and Pinus mugo. Using locally sourced and recycled materials, students created a visually impactful coastal-themed space that demonstrated both technical skill and creative flair.

“This is an exceptional achievement for our students, who have shown remarkable creativity, teamwork and professionalism throughout this project.

“‘Salty Towers’ is a testament to their dedication and passion for horticulture, as well as their understanding of sustainable garden design. To receive both a Gold Medal and Best Interpretation of Theme is something they should be incredibly proud of.”

Impressive track record

The College also extended thanks to sponsors Dorchester Timber Ltd, Goulds Garden Centre and Broadstone for their support in bringing the project to life.

This latest success builds on an impressive track record for Coastland College at the event, having also secured Gold in 2024, as well as Platinum and Best College Garden awards in previous years.

The College said it is “incredibly proud” of the students’ hard work, skill and ambition, which continue to place them among the very best emerging horticultural talent in the region.
