Course Structure

Course Description

Language is how we shape the world, how we tell stories, build connections and express who we are.

At Coastland College, you’ll explore how English works in everyday life: how it changes, adapts, and reflects society. From social media to speeches, literature to journalism, this course helps you understand language as both art and science.

Building on your GCSE knowledge, you’ll analyse real-world texts and how language is used in social context, investigating how factors like gender, region and technology influence how we communicate. You will also study child language acquisition, language change and discourses, and carry out your own indpendent investigation and original writing, combining creative writing with analytical commentary.

You will also gain practical skills in data analysis, research and critical thinking – all highly valued for university and employment.

Progression

A Level English Language works very well alongside most subjects and is ideal preparation for university courses and careers in teaching and education, media and journalism, marketing, publishing, communications or business.
