Course Structure

Course Description

Literature invites us to explore humanity – our emotions, our history and the stories that shape our world.

At Coastland College, you’ll study great works from across time, developing your understanding of how writers respond to the world around them and how their words still resonate today.

Through lively discussion, independent reading and critical analysis, you’ll learn to form and defend your own interpretations, supported by a wide range of perspectives and literary theories.

You’ll study Shakespeare plays and drama, pre-and-post-1900 poetry and prose, exploring connections between texts, challenging assumptions, and building the skills that universities and employers value – clear thinking, effective communication and creativity.

Progression

A Level English Literature complements subjects such as history, film studies, philosophy, politics and English language.

It is excellent preparation for university degrees and careers in media, law and politics, publishing and creative writing, or teaching.

The skills you’ll gain – close reading, argument-building, and critical evaluation – are invaluable in both academic and professional life.
