Course Overview
The UAL Level 1 Award and Diploma in Art, Design and Media is an exciting and supportive introduction to the creative industries. Designed for students who are re-engaging with education or taking their first steps into creative study, this course builds confidence, practical skills and creative understanding while opening up clear progression routes into further education or employment.
Through a wide range of hands-on projects, students will explore art, design and media in an encouraging, workshop-based environment. They will develop core creative skills, experiment with materials and processes, and learn how ideas are generated, researched and communicated—providing a strong foundation for future creative pathways.
Entry Requirements
GCSE grades 2/E or above, including maths and English OR Entry 3 Functional Skills OR an Entry Level qualification.
Course Structure
Course Description
Throughout the course, students will:
- Explore a range of materials, techniques and processes used within art, design and media
- Develop the skills needed to record, experiment with and express creative ideas
- Understand how contextual research supports and informs creative work
- Build confidence in communication skills, including presenting and explaining ideas
- Apply prior knowledge to solve 2D, 3D and time-based creative challenges
- Identify and develop their personal strengths within creative practice
Creative Projects and Skills
Students will gain experience through a variety of practical projects, including:
- Poster and graphic design
- Photoshop and digital image editing
- Video editing
- 3D sculpture and modelling

Progression
On completion, students will have the confidence, creative skills and understanding needed to progress to Level 2 creative courses, apprenticeships, or entry-level roles within the creative industries.
