Level 1 in Health and Social Care qualification provide a broad introduction to a sector and gives learners the opportunity to demonstrate increased skill levels. It includes theory and practical work, and provides a useful starting point for a career in this industry, and progression into further study.
Our courses provide an opportunity for students to learn what skills and abilities are needed to work in this sector. Our team of highly qualified staff use their professional experience to keep courses up to date with the latest developments in the sector. They will teach you important links between theory and practice, which will ensure that you are fully prepared to meet the challenges of this rewarding career. A DBS check will be carried out as part of the course in order to work with vulnerable people.
Our facilities include the brand new Tyneham building at our Cranford Avenue campus, offering state-of-the-art learning and support resources used for Level 3 Health & Early Years, fitted with a mock hospital ward and children’s nursery.
Entry Requirements
Two GCSEs at grade 2 or above, a keen interest in health and social care, and a willingness to learn, both in the classroom and on work placements.
Course Structure
Course Description
This course introduces you to the skills and values needed when working with others. You will explore topics such as care, communication, wellbeing, and supporting individuals, while developing the confidence and practical skills needed for further study or a career in the sector.
You will study a mixture of theory and practical work within the course, including units related to an introduction to Health, Social Care.

Work placement
Work placement is an essential part of all Health and Social Care courses, providing you with valuable experience in a professional health or social care environment. Our dedicated Work Placement Officer will support you in securing a suitable placement and guide you throughout the process. Before attending placement, all students must successfully complete a DBS (Disclosure and Barring Service) check.
Uniform
Students are required to wear the Coastland College Health and Social Care uniform while attending work placement.
The uniform consists of:
- Coastland College Health and Social Care polo shirt
- Black trousers
- Black shoes
To maintain professional standards within health and social care settings, students are not permitted to wear false nails while on placement.
Assessment
Entry 3, Level 1, and Level 2 courses are assessed through coursework, allowing you to demonstrate your knowledge and understanding throughout the year.
Progression
Successful completion of the Level 1 Health and Social Care course can lead to:
- Level 2 Health and Social Care qualifications
- Apprenticeships within the health and care sector
