Expanding your knowledge of the health and social care sector will increase your employment prospects. This is a work-related qualification that will help you to develop skills to work effectively and expand your knowledge and understanding in the different specialist areas of health and social care. There is a mixture of theory and practical work within this course. It will help you to understand and choose the areas of work that you might like to specialise in within the sector. All students will undertake a work placement within the sector during their study.
Our courses provide an opportunity for you to gain valuable work experience alongside your studies, so you learn on the job and not just in the classroom. Our team of highly qualified staff use their professional experience to keep courses up to date with the latest developments in the sector. They will teach you important links between theory and practice, which will ensure that you are fully prepared to meet the challenges of this rewarding career. A DBS check will be carried out as part of the course in order to work with vulnerable people.
Entry Requirements
- Five GCSEs at grade 3 or above, including English or maths, a keen interest in health and social care, and a willingness to learn, both in the classroom and on work placements.
- Students will also need to complete a Disclosure and Barring Service application (formerly CRB) to attend work placements. More information about your Disclosure and Barring Service check will be provided at enrollment.
Course Structure
Course Description
This course allows you to develop a broader understanding of health and social care and the needs of individuals across different settings. You will explore areas such as human development, equality and diversity, communication, and the principles of care, preparing you for progression to Level 3 or employment.

Work placement
Work placement is an essential part of all Health and Social Care courses, providing you with valuable experience in a professional health or social care environment. Our dedicated Work Placement Officer will support you in securing a suitable placement and guide you throughout the process. Before attending placement, all students must successfully complete a DBS check
Uniform
Students are required to wear the Coastland College Health and Social Care uniform while attending work placement.
The uniform consists of:
- Coastland College Health and Social Care polo shirt
- Black trousers
- Black shoes
To maintain professional standards within health and social care settings, students are not permitted to wear false nails while on placement.
Assessment
Entry 3, Level 1, and Level 2 courses are assessed through coursework, allowing you to demonstrate your knowledge and understanding throughout the year.
Progression
Successful completion of this course can lead to:
- Level 3 Health and Social Care qualifications
- Apprenticeships within the health and care sector
