In Short
Students studying on this course will work as a hairdresser in the College salon, which is open to the public and be expected to work in a selected salon in the area for a variety of work experience. Participation in local and regional competitions is highly recommended, and a visit to the Salon International exhibition will be expected.

Selection is by interview. You must have a minimum of 4 GCSE’s at Grade 3 (D) or above to include English and Maths, Science would be an advantage. All applicants will be required to continue to work towards obtaining English and maths at Grade 4 as well as being committed to improving your own skills and willing to work as part of a team.
Course Structure
Course Description
You will study the following:
- Follow Health and Safety practice in the salon
- Working in the hair industry
- Client consultation for hair services
- Shampoo & condition the hair and scalp
- Colour and lighten hair
- The art of dressing hair
- Perm and neutralise hair
- Promote products and services to clients in a salon
- Provide scalp massage services
- Plaiting and twisting hair
Assessment
You will cover the theoretical and practical work necessary for each unit; this will be tested through online testing with the awarding body and practical assessment. Assessment is continuous throughout the year and will take place within a realistic working environment and assignments.
Progression
On completion of this course you could gain employment in a salon at junior stylist level or progress to an Advanced Apprenticeship programme. Progression to the Level 3 course is recommended to advance your skills and widen your career opportunities.
