Horticulture & Plant Science

L2 Horticulture Operative Apprenticeship

Course overview

Horticulture plays a huge role in shaping the spaces we live, work and relax in – from public parks and historic gardens to retail parks, schools, tourist attractions and private estates.
Employers in this sector range from small, family-run businesses to large commercial organisations, charities and local authorities, often with specialist expertise such as landscaping or grounds maintenance.

At Coastland College, horticulture apprentices benefit from expert support both in the workplace and through college based learning. With guidance from sector-specialist Learning and Skills Assessors, they develop the knowledge, skills and confidence needed to thrive in horticultural settings — from public parks and private estates to gardens and landscaped spaces.

Entry Requirements

Ideally applicants would hold a minimum of GCSE grade 3 in both English and Maths. If these are not obtained, an initial assessment will be used to assess entry onto the apprenticeship.

Assessment is continuous throughout your apprenticeship with an external final assessment at the end to complete the apprenticeship.

College attendance – You will attend college 1 day per week in the first year of your apprenticeship.

Duration – 24 months in learning followed by 3 months for end-point assessment.
